April 2024: Autism Awareness Month
In the tapestry of caregiving, every family’s story weaves a unique narrative of challenges, triumphs, and moments of growth. Meet Mdm Siti Rahayu, a dedicated mother on a journey with her son, Muhammad Rusyaidi Bin Rasman, navigating the beautiful complexities of life with autism.
Rusyaidi, a vibrant 22-year-old pursuing his studies at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), embodies resilience and determination. He is guided by the unwavering support of his family and his coaches at Extra•Ordinary People (EPL).
Mdm Siti Rahayu’s journey began before Rusyaidi’s birth, as she dedicated years to serving as a special needs teacher. With her wealth of experience and knowledge, she anticipated the challenges of parenting a child with special needs. However, like many families, financial constraints made it difficult for her to access therapy and support services for Rusyaidi during his early years.
It was a turning point when Rusyaidi joined EPL, a support hub for families like Mdm Siti Rahayu. Through EPL’s programs, Rusyaidi found a nurturing environment where he could thrive and grow. From speech and drama sessions to culinary experiences and artistic pursuits, Rusyaidi embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and curiosity.
For Mdm Siti Rahayu, the difference EPL’s programs have made in Rusyaidi’s life has been noticeable. His social skills have improved, communication is more flexible, and he navigates social situations with newfound confidence. Rusyaidi has also honed some essential life skills, from cooking in the kitchen with friends to expressing himself through art and creativity.
However, Rusyaidi’s confidence and self-esteem have been the most significant transformation. Through EPL’s holistic approach, he has learned to better articulate his thoughts and emotions, fostering deeper connections and greater self-awareness.
As Rusyaidi continues his journey, Mdm Siti Rahayu’s message to fellow parents and members of the public is one of hope and encouragement. She emphasises the importance of understanding and supporting individuals with special needs, recognising that every child’s journey is a process of growth and discovery. EPL hopes more families like hers find support and a sense of community and belonging through its programs.
Rusyaidi’s story reflects the resilience, determination, and potential of every individual. His journey with EPL is a testimony to the transformative power of love and support and the unwavering dedication of caregivers and advocates alike. Each of us can make a difference in the lives of those around us, one step at a time.
Extra•Ordinary People supports individuals with special needs, including those with Intellectual Disabilities, Down Syndrome, and Autism. Our group sessions offer opportunities for beneficiaries to discover and engage in their interests. We then guide them in refining these interests, preparing them for potential vocational pathways that promote greater independence with the support of our trainers. We actively collaborate with corporations that are interested in learning more and providing opportunities for our beneficiaries. Extra•Ordinary People offers significant subsidies to offset program costs, making independence training more accessible for our beneficiaries.
